You only observe aggregate patterns — never confronting drivers, collecting identifying details, or acting as an authority — and you'll leave with practical knowledge you'll carry for life as a pedestrian, cyclist, passenger, future driver, and civic participant.

Phase 1: Core Training & Applied Field Ops

Hours 1-20

Credit Allocation: 20 Hours · Environment: Digital LMS + approved community intersections, school zones, and pedestrian/cyclist corridors.

Part A: 5-Hour Digital Training Syllabus

Hour 1

Vision Zero, CRSIF Mission & the Safe System Mindset

Students learn CRSIF's prevention-first mission, the difference between accidents and preventable collisions, and the Safe System view of safer roads, safer speeds, safer users, safer vehicles, and post-crash care.

Hour 2

Crash Physics, Speed, and Vulnerable Road User Risk

Students study why small speed increases create much higher injury risk using basic kinetic energy concepts and practical school-zone examples.

Hour 3

Youth Risk Profiles & Behavioural Factors

Students examine speeding, distraction, impairment, seatbelt non-compliance, peer pressure, impulsivity, phone use, and passenger dynamics.

Hour 4

Fieldwork Methodology & Data Collection Protocols

Students learn to collect objective safety data using CRSIF tally tools, mobile forms, or structured worksheets.

Hour 5

Ambassador Safety, Privacy & Certification Exam

Students complete safety training covering sidewalk-only observation, buddy system, high-visibility requirements, respectful conduct, and privacy rules. A minimum score of 80% is required before fieldwork is unlocked.

Part B: 15-Hour Applied Field Ops Lab

Hours 6-10

Intersection Compliance Audits

Students complete five unique 1-hour observation sessions at a controlled intersection near a school or community zone. They track complete stops, rolling stops, clear non-compliance, applicable red-light behaviour, and time-of-day patterns.

Hours 11-15

Pedestrian Yield & VRU Interaction Tracking

Students observe marked crosswalks, pedestrian crossovers, bike routes, or micro-mobility corridors. They record driver yielding, pedestrian hesitation, near-miss indicators, cyclist/e-scooter volume, and conflicts between vehicles and vulnerable road users.

Hours 16-20

School Zone and Environmental Risk Audits

Students map school-zone micro-chaos and physical risk factors: illegal double parking, blocked crosswalks, illegal U-turns, faded markings, broken streetlights, obstructed signs, short crossing intervals, missing curb cuts, or sidewalk gaps.

Phase 2: Peer Advocacy & Behavioural Change

Hours 21-30

Credit Allocation: 10 Hours · Environment: Digital creation lab + school/community outreach.

Hour 21

Peer Influence & Positive Norming Strategy

Students review their field data and develop a non-preachy messaging strategy that makes safe walking, cycling, riding, passenger behaviour, and driving the respected peer norm.

Hours 22-24

Digital Asset Production

Students create two advocacy assets such as a local-risk infographic, short video script, passenger safety storyboard, distracted walking post, crosswalk awareness graphic, or school-zone safety tip sheet.

Hours 25-26

Passenger Co-Pilot Guide & Peer Review

Students create a practical youth-facing tool that helps passengers speak up safely when a friend is speeding, distracted, or taking unnecessary risks. They review it with a co-ambassador or CRSIF mentor.

Hours 27-30

Public Outreach or Community Survey

Students choose an approved pathway: a peer education workshop or 10 anonymous community perception interviews about local road-safety concerns.

Approved Engagement Pathways — Pathway A, Peer Educator: deliver a 30-to-45-minute workshop or two shorter presentations using CRSIF materials and local observations. Pathway B, Grassroots Researcher: conduct 10 short anonymous interviews with parents, seniors, cyclists, pedestrians, local businesses, or other community road users.

Phase 3: Data Synthesis & Civic Action

Hours 31-40

Credit Allocation: 10 Hours · Environment: CRSIF dashboard + professional civic writing.

Hours 31-32

Data Cleaning, Formatting, and Calculation

Students organize field logs, remove incomplete entries, categorize observation types, and calculate basic safety indicators such as stop compliance, pedestrian yield rate, VRU volume, hazard frequency, and time-of-day risk patterns.

Hours 33-35

Risk Mapping & Dashboard Summary

Students upload aggregate tallies, geo-tagged infrastructure photos, and survey results into the CRSIF Safety Intelligence Database and generate a 1-page dashboard summary with at least two visual outputs.

Hours 36-37

Technical Safety Brief

Students prepare a professional 1-page Community Safety Brief with the audited location, observation hours, key findings, and evidence-based recommendations.

Hour 38

Safe System Solution Matching

Students match observed risks to practical Safe System solutions such as leading pedestrian intervals, raised crosswalks, curb extensions, or active transportation drop-off zones.

Hours 39-40

Formal Submission & Program Graduation

Students submit the final brief to an appropriate civic or institutional stakeholder, upload proof of submission, complete a 250-word reflection, and receive the Ambassador Certificate once verified.

Verification & Safety Standards

  • Every field session requires a time-stamped entry in the CRSIF portal and, where available, GPS/location confirmation.
  • Students must remain on sidewalks or approved public observation points and may not enter the roadway during field activity.
  • Fieldwork should be completed in pairs when required by CRSIF, school, parent, or site safety rules.
  • Students must never record identifying details, including faces, license plates, vehicle occupants, or private conversations.
  • Each major deliverable must be uploaded to the CRSIF portal for review, verification, and hour approval.
